The Blog Saga

**UPDATE!  I think I finished it!  Please give me your thoughts on the design.  Is it easy to read with the colored background (as opposed to white, like it used to be)?**

Sometimes, you shouldn't touch something at 11:00 at night.  I started tweaking my blog after learning some new tricks.  When I first work on a blog design, I do it in a test blog first.  I did that last night and everything was perfect.  When I went to transfer it all to my blog, some things were a bit wonky!  Why do these things happen!?  Therefore, there's no post today (unless I can get it all figured out soon) and things might look a bit 'off' when you visit today!  Hopefully all will be fixed soon!

Two For Tuesday and State Standard Checklists

I'm linking up for the first time with Teaching Tribune's Two for Tuesday!  This is an awesome link up where teachers discount two of their products on Teachers Pay Teachers 50%.  This is the perfect time to stock up on back to school goodies!

And I've marked down two items that are perfect for back to school!  Click here to visit my store!

First up is my Teacher Planner!  Amazing!  $5.00 for this massive planner perfect for a teacher!  It will NEVER be this price again, so make sure you get it today!  Click here for this incredible deal!

My second deal is my Back to School QR Code activity.  These are your typical back to school questions to ask to better get to know your students!  However, they've been coded as QR Codes so your kids can get familiar with using iPads (or whatever devices you use) while having a good time!  This activity has been marked down to $2.00 for the day!  Click here to get this awesome deal!

AND I'm doubling up on posts today.  The below is mainly for VA teachers, but anyone is welcome to read :)

If you are a teacher, you know that *most* of the country follows the Common Core Standards.  If you live in Minnesota, Nebraska, Indiana, Virginia, Oklahoma, Texas or Alaska, you live in a rebel state that refuses to jump on the bandwagon!  I live in Virginia, and we use the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs) for our state standards and assessments.

In my Reading classroom, I am going to use interactive notebooks with my students this year.  I wanted to make a table of contents page that they could use to glue into the front of their notebooks to keep track of the pages that we have in our notebooks!

I made the table of contents and checklist pages for all of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade tested VA SOLs.  This product is a free product that I invite you to use however you desire!  I just ask that if you download, please give this product a rating!!

CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE DOWNLOAD!

Here are some images of the table of contents in action!

Monday Made It

I *think* this is my first time linking up with Tara's Monday Made It linky party!  This is one of the link ups that I enjoy the most - however, I never seem to participate in this one.  I had planned to have some things ready for today, but didn't get around to getting those things completed.  I'm here with three Made-Its today (one that is halfway done - and one that is for someone else - and one that is from the kitchen)!

Monday Made It #1

The first Monday Made It is halfway done.  I've made it and sent it to be printed, so I don't have the actually printed copy, but I guess it's as good as done!  I made this super fun banner to hang over my classroom library!  I'm hoping this will be a fun addition that will entice some of my reluctant readers to visit the library more often!

Monday Made It #2

So, last week, I announced and shared my new blog design (designed by me!) with the blog world.  I got so many wonderful compliments on the design!  It felt really good to know your hard work is appreciated!  Blog designing is something that I'm still learning, but have come so far with in the past few weeks!  I really enjoy doing this!  I mentioned that I was loving this new hobby of mine, and someone asked if they could be a guinea pig for me!  I couldn't turn it down!  I mean, that would keep me from tinkering with mine, right!?  I wanted to get started on another blog design right away!  So, in less than two days, I designed and created a brand new blog for Stacy over at Alphabetized and Organized!  She's rebranding and this is a fresh start for her! I love her design so much!  It was a lot of fun to make!

Please make sure to click over here and check out Stacy's new blog!  There's going to be some awesome stuff happening around there soon!!

Monday Made It #3

This Monday Made It is from the kitchen!  I decided to make french toast for breakfast yesterday morning.  I typically put a touch of vanilla in my egg mixture when making french toast.  Yesterday, when I reached for the vanilla extract, I accidentally picked up coconut extract instead.  I figured I'd try it for something different!  Couldn't hurt, right?!  So that's what started my Coconut French Toast recipe!  It's super simple, and I'll share the easy recipe on the blog tomorrow (I think!) so make sure you stick around for that!  It was very good!  And please ignore the insane amounts of syrup on the french toast.  I never said it was healthy! ;)

Five for Friday

It's Friday again, so naturally, I'm linking up with Doodle Bugs Teaching for her Five for Friday linky party!

The first thing that I'm going to mention is a huge success!  See this blog?  Isn't it pretty!  I made it all by myself!!  :)  I worked long and hard, talked to some people for tips and advice and read A LOT of information on HTML and CSS!  I'm so excited about the final product!

This is also a success!  The past few months, I've been a terrible blogger!  Today is July 25...and it's my 20th post in July!  And since I don't (typically) blog on the weekends, this is HUGE!  I'm hoping this blogging streak is here to stay!

I've been working this week to gather up some other teacher bloggers and have put together a giveaway!  On August 11, I'll post about my giveaway - there are over 12 bloggers all donating a product of their own!  It's going to be amazing!  Spread the word now!!

I go back to school on August 21.  Later than some of you, but still too soon!!  I've been busy working on some things for my classroom this week - one of which is this sign for my classroom library!  I'm hoping to do a technology-themed classroom - but I have a lot more to make in order to make that happen!  So, we'll see how much of a "theme" I have!!

I've already been to the beach and Europe this summer, but in two weeks, I'll be back at the beach (a different beach) for the last getaway before school starts!  I'm so excited!

I Have Commitment Phobia...With My Blog

**HUGE UPDATE!  If you are on the blog now, you will notice that it is totally different than it was earlier!  I completed my new design and uploaded it.  Ain't it purty!?!?!  I designed everything myself, with design elements from Erin Bradley Designs and design advice/help from the fabulous Lauren at Teach Pray Love Designs!  Please, please, please let me know what you think!  I read so many articles on HTML and CSS today, my mind is turning to mush!  :)  And I promise, I'll keep this design for a loooooooong time!**

---------------------------

In terms of my blog, I can't make a commitment and I'm so indecisive.  Maybe that is bleeding out into my life and is why I'm still single... ;)  Anyways, that's a story for another day!

Today, I'm going to tell they story - saga - of my blog designs.  I've had custom designs done, I've bought pre-made templates, and I've enjoyed each design for one reason or another.  The design you see on my blog now, is one I just recently (a few weeks ago) purchased off of Etsy.  I like it, I do.  It's a cute, simple, and clean design.  The problem?  I've decided that I want something more colorful...and more me.  It's hard to take a pre-made design and have it feel like 'you.'  It's even harder, I think, to tell someone enough about you for them to design a blog that truly encompasses you.  That's why - I wanted to try and design my own blog.  I've tried in the past, but gave up before I completely finished anything, because I wasn't feeling successful in the task.

A few days ago, I sat down and wanted to start a new design to see what I ended up with.  I quickly learned that I was in love with what I was creating.  It was bright, colorful, and fun!  And more than that, I felt that it was ME!!

Here's the header that I came up with...still a work in progress, but pretty much the final product.

Isn't it adorable!  I'm still going to add a menu below, I think.  But the main header is going to stay pretty much like this!  Now, here's where I need some help!  I had a few questions earlier and they were driving me iNsAnE!  But thanks to a few helpful bloggers, I figured them out!  My last question is this...the social media buttons (and the future menu bar) that are in my header.  How can I make those clickable.  I know how to use image-mapping, which I assume is how I would go about making these usable buttons.  But that gives you an HTML code, right?  How would I import the HTML code into the header?  Or is there another route I would need to take for this?

Here's two different backgrounds that I have.  Which do you prefer: the solid purple, or the patterned design?

If you want to see it live on a blog (just my test blog), click here!

What do you think about the design, which background would you pick, and do you know how I could make my header a clickable design?

The Creation of a Teacher Website...Help Needed!

Yesterday, I spent a good part of the day working on this for the new school year.  It's now just under a month until teachers go back.  I'm ready...and I'm not ready to return to school!  One of the things that I was working on was a teacher website.  I don't know if many (or any!) of my parents will use the website, but I like knowing that I have this site!  It makes me feel good, haha!  Here's a screenshot of the home page:

The site is a work in progress.  Currently, I have information on our spelling and vocabulary words for the year, information on my homework rewards program, much needed supplies, I will have a link to the online book club site, and contact information.  I have some other things that I'm going to add, but I'm curious what you would include on your teacher site.  What would you want to see on a website for your child's teacher?

If you are interested in seeing the work-in-progress website, click here!

Do you have a teacher website?  If so, put the link in the comments.  I'd love to see it!

I'm linking up with Third in Hollywood for her Back to School linky party!  This is 'crunch time' and I love seeing everyone's ideas for the new school year!  Emily's idea of a linky party to share a free TpT product and a paid TpT product is super fun!  I can't wait to see what everyone shares!  Here are my products that I'd like to share with you today!  And you can check out my entire store here!

*I've decided to share two paid products.  My teacher planner is a must have, and my QR code SCOOT game is a fun addition to your classroom for back to school!*

Summer Vegetable Tian | From the Kitchen

I'm back with another yummy recipe that I found on Pinterest!  This is a delicious side dish for any meal - you should definitely try it out soon!  The recipe originally comes from Budget Bytes, so make sure you go give her site some love!

Ingredients
1 tsp dried thyme
1 tsp minced garlic
1 potato
1 tomato
1 yellow onion
1 yellow squash
1 zucchini
salt
pepper
1 tbsp olive oil
1 cup shredded Italian cheese

Recipe

1. Preheat the Oven to 400 degrees.  Finely dice the onion and mince the garlic.  Saute both in a skillet with olive oil until softened.

2. While the onion and garlic are sautéing, thinly slice the rest of the vegetables.

3. Spray the inside of an 8x8 square or round baking dish with non-stick spray.  Spread the softened onion and garlic in the bottom of the dish.  Place the thinly sliced vegetables in the baking dish vertically, in an alternating pattern.  Sprinkle generously with salt, pepper, and thyme.

Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes.  Remove the foil, top with cheese and bake for another 15-20 minutes or until the cheese is golden brown.

If you decide to try it out, let me know what you think!  This is one I'll definitely go back to again!

Sunday Social

1. What was the most difficult thing you have been through?
The passing of my grandfather, ten years ago.

2. What was your best birthday?
Even though I don't remember it clearly, I spent my fifth birthday at Disney World!  That's pretty awesome...and I don't know if I've ever beaten that!  Most of my birthdays are spent with family and friends and that's an awesome way to go!

3. What has been your favorite thing you've done in your own city?
Let's be honest.  I currently live in a tiny, tiny town (there's a post office and a bunch of farmers).  That's about it!  So, the best thing I've ever done here, was become a homeowner!  ;)

4. What's your idea of the perfect date night?
Dinner and a movie (whether at home or the theater).

5. Have you ever been to a blogging conference?
No, but I'd love to attend one!  I'm in VA, anyone know of any conferences on the East Coast??

I can't wait to read your Sunday Social!!

Back to School Goals

Jess from I{heart}Recess has created a fun linky to share our goals for the new year!  I'm a bit late, but figured I'd still join in on the fun!

Here are my goals for the 2014-2015 school year!

**Before you start reading, I just wanted to mention that my motto should read, "If you are NOT willing..."  I mistyped that and didn't save the original file to edit the wording in the image!  Oops!!**

Personal: I was doing so well with my exercise, but since I've stopped going to the gym, I've gained 14 of those pounds that I lost!  :(  So, I'm determined to get back on track with everything and get rid of those pounds...for good!

Organization: Every year, I'm scrambling at the end of the year to get my teacher evaluation binder put together.  And every year, I'm wondering why I didn't do all of that throughout the year.  This is the year that I'm going to on top of things!

Planning: I did this some last year, but not on a consistent basis.  My goal is to finish with my lesson plans for the coming week before I go home for the weekend.  Maybe even by Thursday night!  I don't like cramming to get plans done on Sunday nights - which is always how it works out!

Professional: I'm determined to learn so much this year.  I've got some new ideas that I'm going to implement in the classroom, and I'm ready to learn and grow from my mistakes in the past!

Students: I want to create a welcoming sense of community within my classes.  I want my students to feel loved and have a sense of pride with their work!  I want them to want to learn!

Motto: This motto is for both me and my students.  We are going to repeat this often and hopefully it will all stick with them throughout the year!  I might even make a poster for it to hang in the room!

What are your goals for the upcoming year?

Kale, Quinoa, Corn and Tomato Salad

I was doing so well with my weight loss progress.  Then, I cancelled my gym membership and started eating unhealthy again.  The results are terrible.  In an effort to turn this around, I've turned to 'clean eating' and I'm hoping this will get me back on the right track.  The first clean eating recipe that I made was dinner yesterday.  I made a kale, quinoa, corn and tomato salad, that I served with chicken breast (seasoned only with a bit of oil, salt and pepper).  The salad was wonderful!  I can't wait to have leftovers for lunch today!  I found the recipe on pinterest, via this website.

Here is the delicious - and SUPER easy - recipe:

Ingredients:
1 cup of cherry tomatoes, halved
1/2 cup of corn
1 garlic clove
2 cups of kale
1 lemon, zest and juice
1 scallion
1 cup quinoa, cooked
salt and pepper
2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

Recipe
Combine all ingredients in a large bowl and mix well.

See, it really couldn't be more simple, or delicious!  If you try out this recipe, let me know what you think!

When the house floods...

I returned home from vacation on Sunday evening, spent Monday relaxing and trying to get back on schedule, only to find, the next day, that my floors were wet.  The water heater was LEAKING!  Talk about terrible timing!  I called the plumber/electrician and he came out to replace the heater for me.

But, in an effort to make lemonade out of these super sour lemons, I had him install a new kitchen faucet and front porch light.  They were definitely needed and make me smile when I see them!

Whatcha think?!

Meal Planning Made Easy

eMeals did not ask me to write this post...nor do they even know who I am.  I am just sharing something that I have used and loved!

I've always wanted to be a 'meal planner.'  But it never seems to happen.  I go to the store with a list and still buy more than I planned, or I forget things that are necessary for the meals I had planned...you get the idea.  It wasn't until I found eMeals that I became a 'meal planner.'

I had previously seen eMeals but was hesitant and skeptical to purchase this when I didn't know a whole lot about how it worked.  And then I found a Groupon for eMeals.  SCORE!  I figured I'd give it a try and see how it worked.  And I love it!

When you sign up, you can pick one of MANY menu types.  You can change this, however, if you desire.  I am currently receiving the Clean Eating menus, but they also have Vegetarian, Low Fat, Paleo, etc.  Whatever your diet, they have menus for it!  You can also choose between family meals and meals for two.  You can choose breakfast, lunch, dinner, desserts, kids meals, or any combination of them.

**Use the code MEALS10 for 10% off your order!**

New menus come out on Wednesdays and are emailed to you.  They send you menus for the entire week, as well as a shopping list to help at the store!  That is probably my favorite feature!  And their app also has a shopping list that you can check off the items as you put them in your shopping cart!

Here's a quick look at my meals for the week.  Now, I don't always make everything for the week.  I typically pick two or three items per week to make!

Win Your Fall 2014 Classroom!

It's 5:30 in the morning and I'm wide awake thanks to jet lag!  I had an amazing vacation, but I am ready to get back and get ready for the new school year!  The only problem that I have (and I'm sure you have to) is that money is slim and I dream of having a super fun and colorful classroom.  How will that happen?  Well, Inspired in Style is teaming up with Creative Teaching Press to giveaway multiple $200 gift cards to teachers around the country!  I'd love to win this so much!  My little classroom sure needs it!  So, how would I spend the $200?  I'm doing a 'technology theme' in my classroom this year and my colors are purple, turquoise and lime green.  Here's what I would spend the money on!

I teach only reading/language arts and have three sections of classes.  I color code my classes, one is purple, one is turquoise and one is green.  I'd use these charts to track Accelerated Reader points, homework, or something similar.

Greek and Latin Root Words are hard to teach and I'm planning on making a year-long study of this with my students.  This book will help tremendously!

An important part of a classroom is creating a classroom community and making sure students follow directions and are always on task.  So, I think this book will definitely come in helpful at the beginning of the year, when setting classroom expectations!

Creative Teaching Press has so many amazing products for classroom teachers, that it really is hard to pick exactly what I'd spend the money on.  These are just a few of the many things that I want for my classroom!  What would you choose if you won?
