Kitchen Makeover Plans - on the cheap!

Since moving into my house in October, I've been dreaming of redoing the kitchen.  The only problem is that a full kitchen renovation is definitely not in the budget!  So, I've made it my mission to redo the kitchen on the cheap!  Here's what I hope to accomplish for this project!

New Rug/Dining Set

A one day work week? Say what?!

This week, I'm linking up with two week end update linkups.  I'm doing Happies and Crappies with Stephanie, and Five for Friday with Doodlebugs Teaching!

Happies

This first happy is both a happy and a crappy.  Due to this cRaZy winter weather, we were out of school Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.  We went to school yesterday, however, due to icy conditions this morning, we are out again today.  Helllllooooo, one day work week!  I'm enjoying the time off getting stuff done around the house!

I posted the other day about this fabulous new jewelry organizer that I made with a broken mirror.  Check out that post here, if you haven't seen it!

And because I'm talking about updates around the house, I'll share this as well.  Since I was getting tired of the snow and wintery weather, I decided to take down my winter decor and put up some spring decorations!  You can see that here!  Isn't it cute and fun!  I love it!

Today's 'no school' plan?  Organizing my closet (again...I just did it a few weeks ago and it's back to crazyness!) and putting together a new shelving unit that I just bought for that closet!  Here's to being more organized!

Crappies

Same as the happies, all this missed snow!  I do enjoy the time off, but I don't miss the time out, especially with our SOL tests at the end of the year.  I feel like the kids will never be ready - especially if we are never in school!  This is snow day #12 for the students and #13 for the teachers (as we also missed a teacher work day).

I haven't been to the gym in FOREVER!  Last week, I didn't go at all and somehow managed to still lose a little bit of weight.  This week, I didn't go at all, but just don't think that I'll be so lucky!  Today is the day I have my 'weekly weigh in' but I don't want to get on the scale today.  I just can't imagine how it will be a good result!! :)

How was your week?

Jewelry Organization

So, I bought this large mirror from IKEA that matched my bedroom set.  And it sat in the packaging unopened for a long time.  And then I bought my house and moved.  When I brought the mirror in the house, I sat it up against the wall, only for it to slide down and break.  Great.  We all know that breaking a mirror is a million years of bad luck.  I, however, don't think it was terrible luck.  Yes, I had to make another trip up to IKEA to buy a new mirror to replace that one (which, if you know me, isn't a tragedy.  I'll find any excuse I can to drive up to IKEA!).  But then, I had a new mirror and a broken mirror.  And no idea what to do with the broken one.  And then one day, it clicked.

Enter my jewelry.  I have quite a few necklaces.  This photo is from my old house.  But you can see how I tended to just lay out my jewelry on the top of my dresser.

No organization really.  Because if you saw it recently, it was more like a big pile of jewelry.  In the morning, I never felt like digging around for a particular necklace, so I just tended to wear a lot of the same pieces.  I knew I needed some sort of organization.  But I have so many, that most desktop necklace holders were too small, or weren't long enough for my extra long necklaces.

In terms of decoration, I love open frames hanging on the walls.  So, when I broke my mirror, I thought about taking out the broken glass and just hanging the frame.  Great, but how would I complete the look?  A bunch of frames hanging together?  Just the one?  What if I hung my jewelry inside the frame!  Bingo!

Fast forward about four months, because that's about how long it took from coming up with the idea, to actually putting the plan in motion.  I've had this mirror sitting under my bed way too long, and I was tired of seeing it there.  So, I bought some command strips (to hang the frame) and some clear mini command hooks for the necklaces.  And I have super fun necklace organization!

Fun and functional!  I now not only have organized jewelry, but I also have fun 'artwork' filling up this empty wall!

A few people asked how I had the jewelry hanging.  I used the clear mini command hooks.  These hooks worked for the majority of my necklaces.  However, I did have one or two that had chains too thick to hook into these hooks.

These decorations were left over from my winter mantle decorations.  I liked them too much to pack them up and put them away, and I thought they would look perfect in my bedroom!

And now that I don't have piles of jewelry on my dresser, it's finally clean for once!  :)

And just for fun, here's how I store my earrings.  I bought this fun dress form at Marshall's and use sewing pins (that have the pearls on the ends) to hold the earrings in place!

What's your best organizing secret?  Do you have any fun tips for organizing jewelry???

Waiting For Spring

Since we are working on snow day three for this week, I was getting pretty tired of sitting around the house.  I decided to head to the stores and spend some money.  Why not!?  I just took down my Winter decorations and didn't want to look at the bare spot any longer, so I figured now is the best time to get some Spring decorations.  I found a coupon online for Michael's and set out to find some bargains!!

Just as a reminder, here was my Winter decorations.  These are on top of my bookshelves in my office.  Since I don't have a fireplace, this is my makeshift 'mantle.'

And here are my new Spring decorations.  I went minimalist this time, just buying a few decorations.  But, I dug through my loads of Willow Tree angels to find my Spring-iest looking angels to add to the decor!

Are you ready for Spring yet?

A Place at the Table by Susan Rebecca White

I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for my review.  All thoughts expressed below are my own.

My Rating: 4/5
Goodreads Rating:

Goodreads Synopsis: A Place at the Table tells the story of three richly nuanced characters whose paths converge in a chic Manhattan cafe:  Bobby, a gay Southern boy who has been ostracized by his family; Amelia, a wealthy Connecticut woman whose life is upended when a family secret finally comes to light; and Alice, an African-American chef whose heritage is the basis of a famous cookbook but whose past is a mystery to those who know her.

As it sweeps from a freed-slave settlement in 1920s North Carolina to the Manhattan of the deadly AIDs eidemic of the 1980s to todays wealthy suburbs, A Place at the Table celebrates the healing power of food and the magic of New York as three seekers come together in the understanding that when you embrace the thing that makes you different, you become whole.

My Review: I really enjoyed this story.  I liked how the characters lives weaved with each other.  This story was a little different than I expected, it touched on some heavy issues that we encounter in society today, but I felt that Susan Rebecca White did a good job of writing those issues in.  I also felt that she did justice to the two main locations in the story.  My only issue with the story is that we followed Bobby's life so much in the first half, and I was very interested to read more about him and his story, but when another of the characters was introduced, I felt Bobby's story drop and it felt incomplete.  Other than that, I did thoroughly enjoy this story.  I can't wait to read some more stories by Susan Rebecca White.

March Currently and a New Product Update

LISTENING: Big Bang Theory is one of my favorite shows.  But I just can't seem to find time to watch it as it airs.  Thank goodness for DVR!

LOVING: February 28th...aka MY BIRTHDAY!  I had a great weekend!

THINKING: Since it was my birthday weekend and all, I kind of didn't get my lesson plans done for the week.  And now that we were out today and tomorrow because of snow, I'm just not really motivated to do them.  But, I do appreciate the extra time to work on them!!

WANTING: I love snow...but I'm so getting over it!  I just want hammock weather to return!  This weather is insane.  It was 70 degrees yesterday, and tonight's weather is supposed to drop to 5ish degrees.  Say what!??!

NEEDING: I have totally been slacking on my reading.  I need to find more time to read.  Why do I have to be so busy?

????????: The answer is 25.  What's the question?  Comment below with your thoughts!

And, on this snow day, I'm making a new product.  It's actually for my roommate's kindergarten class, but I'm going to make a nice big set and add it to Teacher's Pay Teachers!  It's a coin adding/matching puzzle game.  Look fun?  I'm so excited about this!!

So, what was your weather like today?  Did you have snow?
